Campaigns to protect our environment and improve sustainability efforts are numerous and ongoing in the St. Louis area. Host Don Marsh talks with environmental experts about what has been done, what is being done, and what still needs to be done to further protect our planet. This weekend the EarthWays Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden presents the Green Homes and Great Health Festival. The goal of the event is to celebrate sustainable living and explore ways to maintain a healthy you and a healthy plant.

Our guests explained that “green” issues are gaining more attention throughout the country. “When we first had these conversations five to six years ago it was very fringe,” said Jean Ponzi. She added, “There are still a lot of people learning the language and figuring out why sustainability is important to them but there is a lot of integration going on and that is a big change.”
When it comes to “green” building practices Emily Andrews said, “We see more and more people who are interested incorporating green building practices into their design construction and maintenance and the interest in that is growing.”
Local governments have an important role in protecting the environment. Andrews said, “Everyone must be responsible for this but I do think that local governments have created a real movement around combating climate change and addressing greenhouse gas emissions. That has been through the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement which is a national effort for cities to address this.”
