Your questions, answered: This year’s tax deadline is April 18. Here’s what you should know.

State and federal income taxes are due April 18, a deviation from years past, when they are normally due by April 15. Missourians who live in areas that were impacted by last year’s flooding also have a little more time to file, with a deadline of May 16, because of a tax relief issued by the IRS.

Lance Weiss, a certified public accountant and partner with SFW Partners LLC in St. Louis, joined “St. Louis on the Air” host Don Marsh to answer listener questions about taxes.

Of the many changes in filings that Weiss talked about, one stands out in particular: keep any eye out for new tax paperwork associated with health insurance.

For those who enrolled in the Health Insurance Marketplace through the Affordable Care Act, you will need to fill out a 1095-A, which allows policyholders to take the premium tax credit offered through the program.

For those who  have received forms from health insurance procured through an employer, forms 1095-B and 1095-C do not need to be included in your filing, but Weiss recommends keeping those forms on file in case of later follow-up regarding the status of your health insurance.

And don’t worry if this process is still as confusing as ever. As one caller said during the program, “I'm an engineer, I've got a graduate degree, but I still struggle to figure this out.”
