A local company is providing prescriptions for underserved, low income and chronically ill people.
On Thursday’s St. Louis on the Air, host Don Marsh talked about Rx Outreach, a non-profit organization based in Maryland Heights, which is a fully licensed mail-order pharmacy. Joining the discussion was Darryl Munden, president of Rx Outreach.
The organization started as a program in 2004 within Express Scripts, the largest pharmacy benefit management in the United States.
“There were employees within Express Scripts that said ‘can’t we do something of good to be able to help those that are out there in need,’” Munden said.
In 2010, the program separated as a non-profit company. Munden said the main mission of the organization is to provide affordable medication to those in need who meet the income eligibility requirement. It also caters to areas that lack in pharmacies, doctors and hospitals.
“[Rx Outreach is] an ideal solution because we’re a mail-order pharmacy and we can get to those locations that people can’t easily get to,” he said.
The pharmacy offers a wide range of generic medication as well as “a small slice of medications” that are brand-name. A six-month supply of generic medication can be bought for only $20.
How it works
- Applicants must get a prescription from a doctor or physician
- Mail prescription to Rx Outreach or have it sent via email
- Fill out a one-page application by accessing the document online or calling in the call-center and speaking to one of the organization’s advocates
- Rx Outreach will fill the medication and ship it out
