Residential Recycling Uptick Presents Challenges, Benefits

Objects that can't be recycled.

Objects that can't be recycled.

The past few months have shifted recycling practices in St. Louis and elsewhere. There’s been a decrease in commercial product as workplaces resorted to work-from-home models — and an uptick in residential recycling.

That presents both advantages and challenges for area recycling plants, including Hazelwood-based Republic Services. Workers are noticing more cardboard, disposable personal protective equipment — and more of the dreaded plastic bag.

What’s welcome and what's not? Republic Services general manager Brent Batliner joined Thursday’s St. Louis on the Air to talk about how the center has adjusted to changes brought on by the pandemic and reiterate what to avoid tossing in the recycling bin.

St. Louis on the Air” brings you the stories of St. Louis and the people who live, work and create in our region. The show is hosted by Sarah Fenske and produced by Alex Heuer, Emily Woodbury, Evie Hemphill and Lara Hamdan. The audio engineer is Aaron Doerr.
