In Unexpected Exhibit, German Art Is On Display At The St. Louis Art Museum

Gerhard Richter’s painting, “Betty,” is one of the most significant works on display at the St. Louis Art Museum as part of “Storm of Progress: German Art after 1800.” Painted in 1988, “Betty” is based off of a photograph of the artist’s 11-year-old daughter.

The St. Louis Art Museum’s exhibition calendar is normally set three to five years in advance. But with complications in transporting fine art brought on by the pandemic — among other issues — the already planned-upon exhibit calendar wasn’t possible.

Despite the challenges, museum staff scrambled to pull together a new exhibition. To do so, curators turned to what they already had in house — an impressive and world-class collection of German art.

“Storm of Progress: German Art After 1800” is on display at the St. Louis Art Museum through Feb. 28.

On Wednesday’s St. Louis on the Air, host Sarah Fenske talked with Hannah Klemm, a co-curator of the exhibit and an associate curator of modern and contemporary art.
