Southern Airways Express said it could bring in 20,000 passengers annually, but Quincy officials allege it has delivered only a laundry list of problems. They’re looking to the U.S. Department of Transportation for a new Essential Air Service Provider.

Lambert’s relationship with Southwest Airlines has helped the airport reestablish passenger traffic after losing its TWA hub in the 2000s. That rebound now helps the airport drive 5.5% of the region’s gross domestic product.

Reaching the milestone will qualify the airport for more federal funds right as the facility is planning to build a new terminal and attract even more travelers.

The St. Louis Airport Commission has approved a Boeing expansion project that would allow the organization to lease 158 acres of land from St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
