National Park Service adds three St. Louis sites to Underground Railroad network

Three St. Louis-area locations have been added to the National Park Service's National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom for their connections to enslaved people.

Dennis Bentley has a morbid but valuable hobby: He’s spent years photographing some 3,000 gravesites around Missouri.

Carlos Glenn, president of the Nu Gamma Sigma Alumni Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. , explains his fraternity’s plans to clean Booker T. Washington Cemetery in Millstadt. Between 1919 to to the early 1970s, more than 12,000 Black people mainly from the East St. Louis, Alorton and Centreville areas were buried in the cemetery.

The Booker T. Washington Cemetery was one of the only places where Black Residents in the Metro East could bury their loved ones in the 20th century. Locals who are working to restore the cemetery say that history has been forgotten.
