The six-time Olympic medalist and others spoke at the 28th annual Winning in Life event earlier this month. Joyner-Kersee, the East St. Louis native, told students that pursuing their dreams in life and sports take the same tools.

The Eads Bridge was completed 150 years ago this July. It connects East St. Louis and the City of St. Louis.

This riot was a predecessor of the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921, and Viola Fletcher, one of the last survivors of the riot, said Tuesday at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville that reparations are due to survivors and their descendants.

This is not the first time the East St. Louis Police and Fire Pension Boards plan to ask the Illinois comptroller to intervene. In 2019, the comptroller did just that — the intercept caused interruptions in city services.

The program was founded by Brianna Morales — the young East St. Louis teacher named the 2023 Illinois Teacher of the Year last spring.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has been talking about constructing a connector between Illinois 3 in Fairmont City and Illinois 203 and Madison, Illinois, for the last 20 years. Recently, the state agency unveiled its preferred route.

The longtime civil rights and voting rights activist died Thanksgiving Day in O'Fallon, Illinois. Scott spent 32 years as the head of the East St. Louis NAACP branch.
