Andrew “Dan” Lester, 84, has a preliminary hearing in Clay County Court on Thursday and Friday, where the high-profile case will be held with limited media coverage and a gag on what attorneys can say outside of court.

The Connecticut-based National Shooting Sports Foundation filed the suit in federal court in East St. Louis on Monday, just two days after Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed the bill into law.

The opinion was handed down in a lawsuit by a central Illinois lawmaker who argued that banning the sale of high-powered rifles and high-capacity magazines violates the state constitution.

Faith leaders and community organizers will discuss gun violence and public safety Wednesday at the Progressive National Baptist Convention town hall meeting in St. Louis. They'll convene public conversations about ways to prevent gun violence in Black communities and how to advocate for better gun control laws.

St. Louis police said they have one juvenile in custody following the shooting on Washington Avenue near 14th Street early Sunday morning.

The ordinance would stop the open carry of firearms without a concealed carry permit. A similar proposal, which would have barred minors from carrying a firearm in public without adult supervision, failed to gain ground in the state legislature this year.

There could be consequences for people who openly display a gun and don’t have a concealed carry permit, such as a fine of at least $500 and up to 30 days in jail.

The decision means the ban will now likely remain in effect while the federal appeals court in Chicago takes time to hear arguments in the case.
