“While the state is incurring expenses that, frankly, should be paid by the federal government," Mendoza said. "I want to make sure that taxpayers know exactly what the state is spending money on when it comes to the arrival and care of asylum seekers."

Republicans in the Illinois Senate indicated their sticking point for budget negotiations this year will be the same as it was last year — state spending on programs for noncitizens and recent arrivals from the country’s southern border.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced a plan Tuesday to add 200 Missouri National Guard members and 22 state highway patrol troopers to the 250 guardsmen already deployed to southern border by next month.

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones created the Office of New Americans in October to help prepare the city for newly arrived immigrants. Jones appointed Gilberto Pinela, Cortex's former communications director, to lead the office with plans to help the city become the fastest growing city for immigrants.

Pritzker joined in on a letter penned by Democratic governors who said political machinations are delaying much-needed help for their states and cities. They urged the passage of President Joe Biden’s $110 billion request for wartime aid and border security.

St. Louis immigrant aid groups said they, and incoming immigrants, need more support and language resources in order to be able settle into and thrive in the community.
