Reginald Hudlin, the East St. Louis native who came to fame with his 1990 film “House Party,” played with genre expectations for his first holiday film, “Candy Cane Lane.” It’s Hudlin’s first time working with Eddie Murphy since directing “Boomerang” in 1992.

Hettie Barnhill's, “a love letter to Brian, Lesley, and Michelle,” will be shown at the Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. The experimental feature is a commentary on the injustices faced by Black people in this country.

“We have so many different cultural aspects, and we’re not taking care of them,” said one East St. Louisan.

All too often, artistic expression proves inaccessible to everyday people, a kind of luxury out of reach for those struggling to make ends meet. Katherine Dunham understood this reality when she first turned her attention to East St. Louis in the 1960s. And so does Leverne Backstrom, one of a handful of dedicated community members still carrying on the world-renowned dancer and choreographer’s legacy there today.
