St. Louis’ public safety director will decide among four finalists wanting to lead the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Family members of the gunman who killed two and wounded several others during a shooting rampage at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School recently asked police to take a gun from the home, interim St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Michael Sack said Wednesday. They also had been monitoring his mental health and helped him get treatment and medication.

Gov. Mike Parson used a Tuesday visit to St. Louis to thank nonprofits he helped support with additional funding in the 2022 budget.

Mayor Tishaura Jones said using the Boulware Group will make the search for a permanent chief more transparent. Lt. Col. Michael Sack will take over as interim chief on June 18, when Chief John Hayden retires.
