It has been nearly a year since the pandemic first forced schools in Missouri to close. For many children, the long absence is starting to drag down grades and drain their love of school.

Nareissa Smith, an attorney and teacher with the St. Louis-based company, Varsity Tutors, says this is a good practice because it's a learning opportunity and it gets kids excited about civic engagement.

“Teaching in Room 9” offers local students reading and math four days a week and social studies and science each Friday via the Nine Network. St. Louis' PBS affiliate boasts well over 350 episodes, and more than a half-million views from local students.

Many schools are now conducting classes 100% online. Navigating virtual education has many families scrambling to make it work, but likely none more so than families with special needs students.
