The western Illinois city has been without a team since the Gems left in 2023. The Springfield Lucky Horseshoes' ownership group wants to change that.

Fontbonne and Quincy universities are founding members of the Midwest Sprint Football League, which will begin play in 2022. Fontbonne’s president, Nancy Blattner, brought the idea with her from her previous post on the east coast.
