Ranked Choice Voting

Missouri voters passed a majority of the proposed ballot measures, amending the state constitution to ensure the right to an abortion, legalizing sports gambling in the state and more.

Missouri lawmakers voted to put the measure on the ballot when they were unable to pass a more controversial proposal to change how a majority is calculated on constitutional amendments proposed by initiative petition.

If voters pass the resolution, it would bar local governments from adopting ranked-choice voting models. St. Louis municipal elections would not be affected.

Ranked choice voting has a long history in U.S. elections at the municipal level. But it has become more widely adopted in modern times, including in several states and dozens of municipalities.
